A chaotic penultimate stage on the Volta Catalunya resulted in a primary World Tour-level victory for Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek), after simply half an hour of racing.
Excessive winds curtailed the route that had been initially deliberate for the Queen stage, stopping the race from reaching the summit end at Queralt. Race organisers proposed a brand new shortened route, and although they initially meant the peloton to finish a full lap of the circuit, the riders united to request that they race solely the ultimate portion of the primary lap.
After a quick and livid 25 kilometres of racing, largely happening on a protracted descent, Simmons launched a speculative assault beneath the flamme rouge, and regardless of being pursued by Pavel Bittner (Staff Picnic-PostNL), he was in a position to maintain off the quickly approaching chasing pack to take the stage win. Bittner completed second, and Corbin Robust (Israel-Premier Tech) was third.
There have been no adjustments within the total standings after a brief and frenetic journey into Berga. Juan Ayuso (UAE Staff Emirates-XRG) retains the race lead by a single second over Primož Roglič (Pink Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) heading into tomorrow’s ultimate circuit stage round Barcelona. Enric Mas (Movistar) stays in third spot on GC.
